Nerve Supplement Vitamin Guide: B12, B6 and Why a Test Comes First
Two vitamins matter most for nerve talk: low B12 can damage nerves, and too much B6 taken for a long time can too. A blood test shows which one applies to you, so test before you guess. The six names FlowNerves lists include no B vitamin.

Which vitamins are linked to nerve problems?
Two come up again and again. Vitamin B12 is needed to keep nerves working, and a shortage can cause numbness, tingling and nerve damage that may become permanent if it goes untreated.(NIH ODS, Vitamin B12 (HP)) The other surprise is vitamin B6. Too much of it, taken for a long time, can itself cause nerve damage in the limbs.(NIH ODS, Vitamin B6 (HP))
That second fact is why "more vitamin" is not a plan. A bottle with a big B6 number is not a safer bottle.
Who tends to run low on B12?
Some people absorb B12 poorly or eat little of it. The NIH lists older adults, strict vegetarians and vegans, and people with certain stomach or bowel conditions. It also notes that metformin and some acid-reducing medicines can lower B12 levels.(NIH ODS, Vitamin B12 (HP))
| Situation | Ask your clinician |
|---|---|
| Taking metformin | Should my B12 be checked? |
| Long-term acid reducer | Could this lower my B12? |
| Vegan or vegetarian diet | Do I need a blood test or a supplement? |
| Tingling in both feet | What tests rule out B12, diabetes and thyroid? |
How is a vitamin problem found?
A blood test. A supplement cannot tell you whether you were low,. Doctors also work up tingling with blood tests and nerve studies.(Mayo Clinic, Peripheral Neuropathy (diagnosis, treatment))
- Diabetes and high blood sugarThe most common cause of peripheral neuropathy in the United States. Blood sugar checks and foot exams are the first steps. (NIDDK, Diabetes and Foot Problems)
- Low vitamin B12A treatable cause of numbness and tingling. A simple blood test checks it, and metformin and some stomach medicines can lower it. (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12 (HP))
- Alcohol, kidney or thyroid diseaseLong-term heavy drinking, kidney failure and thyroid problems can all damage nerves. (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy)
- Medicines, including chemotherapySome cancer drugs, antibiotics and heart medicines can affect nerves. Never stop a medicine on your own. (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy)
- Pinched nerves and injuryCarpal tunnel, a slipped disc or an injury can press on a nerve, and the symptoms stay in one area. (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy)
- No cause foundIn some people no cause is found. That is a reason to stay under a doctor's care, not to stop looking. (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy)
A vitamin cause is only one on this list. Diabetes is the best known, and sometimes no cause is found.(NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy)
Does FlowNerves contain a B vitamin?
The seller names six ingredients: magnesium glycinate, alpha lipoic acid, butcher's broom, L-carnitine, turmeric extract and coenzyme Q10. None is a B vitamin. No amount is printed for any of them, so the capsule cannot stand in for a B12 test or a B12 treatment. See the vitamin B12 and nerves guide for more.

FAQ01
FlowNerves questions people ask
Can a B-complex fix nerve tingling on its own?
Not reliably. The cause matters, and a blood test shows whether a vitamin is involved.
Is it possible to take too much B6?
Yes. Long-term intake above the upper level can cause nerve damage.
How long does B12 treatment take to work?
That varies, and a clinician sets the plan and checks your levels.
