Diabetes Foot Care: Warning Signs, Daily Checks and Supplements
High blood sugar over time can damage the nerves in the feet, so a person may not feel a blister, cut or sore. Check both feet every day, treat any wound that does not heal as urgent, and keep every medicine going. A supplement such as FlowNerves is not part of diabetes care, and no study tested it in people with diabetes.

The mechanism01
Why does diabetes affect the feet?
Over years, high blood sugar can damage nerves and narrow blood vessels, and the feet sit farthest from the heart and the brain. The American Diabetes Association says about half of people with diabetes have some form of nerve damage.(ADA, Understanding Neuropathy and Your Diabetes)
Nerve damage in the feet is called diabetic peripheral neuropathy. It can cause tingling, burning, sharp pain or numbness. Numbness is the dangerous one, because pain is the alarm that makes people stop walking on an injury.
A person with a numb foot can step on a pebble, wear a rubbing shoe for hours or burn the skin on a hot floor and feel nothing. A small wound then has days to grow, and wounds heal slowly when blood flow is poor. The NIDDK explains that nerve damage and poor blood flow together are what make foot problems serious in diabetes.(NIDDK, Diabetes and Foot Problems)
That is a reason for a habit, and the habit is cheap.
Do not wait on these02
What warning signs should you act on?
Some changes need a call to your care team the same day, and a few need an emergency room. The CDC advises people with diabetes to call a clinician about a sore that does not heal, and about skin that turns red, warm or painful.(CDC, Diabetes and Your Feet)
| Sign | What to do |
|---|---|
| A cut, blister or sore that is not healing | Call your clinician the same week, sooner if it is growing |
| Red, warm, swollen or painful skin | Call the same day; it can mean infection |
| Drainage, a bad smell or black skin | Seek urgent care |
| New numbness, burning or tingling | Book an appointment and bring notes |
| A foot that is cold, pale or blue | Call the same day |
| Fever with a foot wound | Go to urgent care or the emergency room |
| Sudden weakness, face drooping, trouble speaking | Call 911 |
Do not wait for pain. Because numb feet may hurt little even when badly injured, the look of the foot matters more than how it feels.
A two-minute habit03
How do you check your feet each day?
The best time is evening, in good light, with the feet dry. If you cannot see the soles, use a mirror or ask someone to look.
- Look at the tops, sides and soles of both feet.
- Look between the toes for cracks, white soft skin or redness.
- Check the heels and the balls of the feet for hard patches, blisters or cuts.
- Look at the toenails for ingrown edges, color change or thickening.
- Feel for warm spots, swelling or dry cracked skin.
- Write down anything new, and call if it persists.
A few daily habits support the check. Wash the feet in lukewarm water and dry them well, including between the toes. Wear socks that fit and shoes that fit, and look inside a shoe before putting it on. Do not walk barefoot, even indoors. These steps appear in the CDC's foot care advice and the NIDDK's guidance.(CDC, Diabetes and Your Feet)
A foot doctor or your primary clinician can examine your feet at each visit. Ask for it if no one has.
Honest limits04
What can a supplement do for diabetic nerve damage?
This is the question behind many searches for a diabetic neuropathy supplement. The honest answer has three parts.
- First, no supplement replaces blood sugar care, foot checks or a clinician's plan.
- Second, alpha lipoic acid is the one name on the FlowNerves list with diabetic neuropathy trials, and the results are mixed. A Cochrane review of three trials in 816 people found probably little or no effect on symptoms at six months.(Cochrane 2024, ALA for diabetic neuropathy)
- Third, the trials tested set amounts of that one name in people with diabetes. The FlowNerves label as we have it prints no amount, and no study tested the capsule.
FlowNerves is described by its seller as nutritional support, and the seller says it is not a drug and not a neuropathy medicine. Nothing on the bottle front names diabetes. If you read a claim that connects the capsule to diabetic feet, ask for the study.

What should you ask before adding a capsule?
Alpha lipoic acid can lower blood sugar, so Memorial Sloan Kettering says people who take diabetes medicine or insulin need to talk with their prescriber.(MSK, Alpha-Lipoic Acid) Other names on the list have their own cautions, such as butcher's broom with diabetes, which one cancer-center page says to avoid.
Take these questions to your pharmacist.
- Could any of the six names change my blood sugar or my insulin needs?
- Do any of them interact with my blood thinner, blood-pressure pill or thyroid medicine?
- Do I need to check my blood sugar more often if I start?
Never lower or stop a diabetes medicine because you added a supplement. Changes go through your prescriber.
Call right away06
When do foot problems become an emergency?
A foot wound with fever, spreading redness, black skin or a foul smell can spread fast. Go to urgent care or an emergency room the same day.
Sudden weakness or numbness on one side, a drooping face, trouble speaking, chest pain or trouble breathing are 911 situations.(CDC, Stroke Signs and Symptoms)
- Call 911: sudden weakness or numbness on one sideFace drooping, arm weakness or trouble speaking can be a stroke. Call right away; do not drive yourself.
- Call 911: chest pain or trouble breathingThese are emergencies, not supplement questions.
- A foot sore, blister or cut that will not healPeople with diabetes or numb feet should see a clinician soon, the same day if it looks infected.
- Weakness that spreads, or trouble walkingWeakness that climbs or numbness that spreads fast needs prompt care.
- Tingling that wakes you up every night or keeps getting worseSee a doctor. Blood tests for sugar, B12 and thyroid are usually the start.
- Hives, swelling of the face or wheezing after a capsuleA possible allergy. Stop and get help; call 911 if breathing is hard.
Stroke signs: (CDC, Stroke Signs and Symptoms). Neuropathy basics: (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy). This list is not complete, and a supplement is never a reason to wait.

FAQ07
Diabetes and foot questions
Can diabetic nerve damage be felt in the hands too?
Yes. It usually starts in the feet and can later reach the hands, which is why doctors ask about both.
How often should my feet be examined by a clinician?
Ask your care team. Many ask for an exam at least once a year, more often with numbness or a past sore.
Are special shoes needed for numb feet?
Some people need them. A clinician can assess pressure points and advise on fit before you buy anything.
Is tingling at night a sign of diabetic neuropathy?
It can be, but low vitamin B12 and other causes produce the same feeling. A blood test helps sort it out.
Does FlowNerves lower blood sugar?
We make no such claim. Alpha lipoic acid is reported to lower blood sugar, which is exactly why people on diabetes medicine must ask first.
Should I soak my feet to ease burning?
Hot water can scald numb skin. Use lukewarm water tested with an elbow or a thermometer, and ask a clinician for other options.
Can I trim my own toenails with numb feet?
Many people can, with care. Cut straight across, and see a foot specialist if nails are thick, ingrown or hard to reach.
